Supporting the Purebred Dog Since 1954

Junior Showmanship

Realizing that today’s younger generation holds the future of our sport in their hands, and wanting to encourage children in the sport, the Penn Ridge Kennel Club, together with the AKC Registered Handlers Program  and with the help of our official dog food sponsor, includes special activities just for the Juniors at our shows each August.

Our Junior Showmanship classes offer fabulous prizes, with the first place Junior in each class both days receiving two all-day passes to Hersheypark.  Other class placements are rewarded with Vendor Bucks and items offered by our sponsors.

On Friday, the Best Junior Handler receives the “Carolyn Award”…a prize of $500 toward expenses to compete in Junior Showmanship at the Westminster Kennel Club in New York City the following February.

A cash award toward expenses for the end year AKC/Eukanuba show is made to the top Junior Showmanship exhibitor at the Saturday show.

We have worked with the AKC Registered Handlers program to present clinics for the Juniors as a fun way for the Juniors to better their skills at presenting their dogs in the ring, learning from some of the top professionals in the sport.

Since the Friday show is Penn Ridge Kennel Club’s day to spotlight the Juniors, there is a luncheon for the children entered in Junior Showmanship.  Whenever possible, the judge from that day’s Junior Showmanship competition addresses the Juniors at the luncheon.  The luncheon concludes with a raffle just for the Juniors, with prizes that have included Hersheypark tickets, TV’s and other electronics, Vendor Bucks, T-shirts, hats and more.  There is no fee to attend the luncheon, it is courtesy of the Penn Ridge Kennel Club and our official sponsor, PURINA.

In addition to supporting our Juniors with great prizes, the luncheon and raffle, the Penn Ridge Kennel Club is extremely proud to have made significant donations to the AKC George Ward Scholarship Fund to help with the education of young people in our sport. In 2016 the scholarship fund will again be one of the primary beneficiaries of the proceeds from our shows and the Foundation’s charity fundraiser.scholarship check 2010
